Chapter 5 - Electrons and bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Atomic orbitals
A
A region around the nucleus that can hold up to two electrons, with opposite spin. Shells are made up of atomic orbitals
2
Q
Ionic bonding
A
The electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions. Holds together anions and cations
3
Q
Covalent bonding
A
The strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms
4
Q
Multiple covalent bonds
A
Exists when two atoms share more than one pair of electrons. Can get double or triple bonds
5
Q
Dative covalent bond (coordinate bond)
A
A covalent bond in which the shared pair of electrons has been supplied by one of the bonding atoms only
