Q
Combustion of alcohols
A
Always forms carbon dioxide and water
2
Q
Dehydration of alcohols
A
Where water molecules are removed from an alcohol molecule. Heated under reflux in presence of acid catalyst such as concentrated sulphuric acid or concentrated phosphoric acid
3
Q
Substitution reaction of alcohols
A
Reacts with hydrogen halides to form haloalkanes. Heated under reflux with sulphuric acid and a sodium halide.
4

Oxidation of alcohols
A
Oxidised by an oxidising agent, usually acidified potassium dichromate. Forms a ketone, aldehyde or carboxylic acid
