Chapter 4 - Acids and redox Flashcards
Acids
Release H+ Ions when dissolved in water. Proton donors
Strong acids
Completely dissociate in water to release H+
Weak acids
Partially dissociates to release some H+
Diprotic acids
Release two protons (H+ Ions). e.g H2SO4
Triprotic acids
Release three protons (H+ Ions). e.g H3PO4
Bases
Chemicals that will react with protons released by acids. Proton acceptors
Alkalis
Soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH-) when they dissolve in water
Amphoteric
Can be classed as either an acid or a base. e.g water
Oxidation number/state
Shows the charge on an atom if all of its bonds were considered totally ionic
Redox reaction
Involves the transfer of electrons resulting in both the oxidation and reduction of atoms
Disproportionation
When the same element is oxidised and reduced during a reaction
Titre
The volume of liquid used in a titration
End post
The point where two solutions have fully reacted in a titration
