Chapter 6- Preventing And Treating Diseases Flashcards
What is a clinical trial?
Testing on healthy patients
What are antigens?
Proteins on the surface of the cells
A bacterial disease
Diptheria
A viral disease
Polio, measles
Antiseptics-
Kill microorganisms
Antibodies-
Kill bacteria and are made by white blood cells

Stages of new drugs-
Up to 13 yrs-
- Tested in lab to find its toxicity and efficacy on cells, tissues or whole organs
- Tested on animals (preclinical trials)
- (Clinical trials) on healthy patients
- Then on the people with the effected disease
- Once passed can be sold, but still regularly tested
What is a Hybridoma cell?
Lymphocytes (that produce antibodies but do not divide) and tumour cells (that don’t make antibodies but divide)
How can monoclonal antibodies be used?
Pregnancy tests (see HCG and that changes colour of test strip) and diagnosis of disease and measuring and monitoring and research and treating disease
What is a benign tumour?
A tumour that stays in one place but they can grow very large very quickly
What are malignant tumour cells?
