Chapter 5- Communicable Diseases Flashcards
How are they spread?
Air (influenza), direct contact (HIV), water (raw foods)
What is a microbe?
Pathogen that causes diseases
Physical barriers-
Eyelashes, skin, stomach acid, hair, earwax
Phagocytosis-
Stops bacteria spreading by releasing chemicals
Lymphocytes
Destroyed pathogens l, white blood cells. Reproduce quickly
WBC can (1)
Ingest pathogens (phagocytosis)
WBCS can (2)
Produce antibodies, they are specific type of pathogen.
WBCS (3)
Produce antitoxins to neutralise the reaction
Lymphocytes
Production of antibodies, broken down
Phagocytosis
Engulfs pathogens and breaks them down
Antitoxins
Neutralise reaction
Vaccine-
Contains dead/ inactive reaction- triggers immune response.
what is communicable diseases?
they cab spread from person to person and be like bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. an example is measles and malaria
what are the factors that effect the immune system?
bad diet, stress or life situation (eg not having the accessibility to medicine)
what do antibiotics and antiseptics do?
antibiotics stop the growth of bacteria and antiseptics stop the growth of fungi
