Why are flight duty times used?
To prevent chronic fatigue and to ensure sufficient sleep and rest
What are the operators responsiblities regarding FDT?
Home base nominated for each crew member and duty rosters published in advance
Define block time
The time between an aeroplane first moving to when it is parked
Define duty
Any task a crew member is required to carry out associated with the business of an AOC holder
Define duty period
A period which starts when a crew member is required by an operator to commence a duty and ends when the person if free from ALL duties
Define night duty
Any duty occurring between 0200 to 0459 in the time zone which the crew is acclimatised to
Define flight duty period
Any time a person operates an aircraft as a crew member (starts at reporting time to on block time of final flight of the day)
Define home base
Location nominated by the operator to the crew member from where the crew normally starts and ends duty periods
Define a local day
A 24 hour period starting at 0000 local time
Define a local night
A period of 8 hours between 2200 and 0800 local time
Define a single day free of duty
A day free of duty plus 2 local nights
Define positioning
The transferring of a non operating crew member from place to place
Define a rest period
An uninterrupted and defined period of time during which a crew member is free from all duties and standby
When is the window of circadian low (WOCL)?
The period between 0200 and 0559 in home base time
Define standby
A period of time during which a crew member is required by the operator to be available to receive an assignment for a flight positioning or other duty without an intervening rest period
