Chapter 6 (Endocrine System) Flashcards
What does the endocrine system do?
produces chemicals called hormones
what do hormones do?
regulate many body activities and functions
pancreas is important why?
it secretes the hormone insulin
Insulin
critical to the body’s use of glucose
adrenaline glands
they secrete epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine
epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine
These chemicals serve as neurotransmitters to engage in sympathetic nervous system through a series of chemicals receptors.
EXAMPLE: when fight or flight response is engaged, norepinephrine is released. activates receptors in the lungs.
Renal/urinary system
helps body regulate fluid levels, filter chemicals and adjust body pH.
pineal gland
regulates circadian rhythm
pituitary gland
regulates many other encoring glands
Kidney
filters blood and produces urine
Ureter
transports urine to bladder
urinary bladder
stores urine
male urethra
transports urine to exterior
Female urethra
transports urine to exterior
Bicarbonate
produces by kidneys and it helps regulate the acidity or pH in the body
