what does the digestive system do?
provides the mechanisms by which food travels and is digested or broken down into absorbable form.

broken down by chewing and saliva, from mouth through oropharynx into esophagus then to stomach.
what organs all work in the digestive process?

stomach
hollow organ, expands.
acidic gastric juices in the stomach do what?
begin to break food down that the body can convert to energy.
small intestine
divided into three parts: duodenum, jejunum and ileum. receives food and breaks down for absorption.
Where are nutrients absorbed by the body?
through wall of small intestine
large intestine (colon)
removes water from waste products as they move towards elimination. anything not absorbed is moved along through the colon as feces.
Liver
produces bile which assists in breaking down of fats. detoxifying harmful substances, strong sugar and assists in production of blood products.
gallbladder
serves as storage system for bile from the liver
pancreas
produces hormone insulin. secretes juices that assist in breaking down proteins, carbs and fats.
what is the significance of hormone insulin?
involved in regulation of sugar in the bloodstream
Spleen
acts as blood filtration system, filters out old blood cells. holds a significant amount of blood the body can use in case of significant blood loss.
Appendix
made up of lymphatic tissue.
