Chapter 6 (Cardiovascular system) Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system consist of?
heart, blood, blood vessels. (circulatory system)
What are the four chambers of the heart?
2 upper- atria
2 lower- ventricles
aorta
the main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body. The blood leaves the heart through the aortic valve.
How does blood travel?
from the right atrium, to the right ventricle, goes to the lungs thru pulmonary veins to be oxygenated, goes to the left atrium via pulmonary veins. when the oxygenated blood is in the left atrium, the heart contracts it sends the blood to the left ventricle. pumps blood into aorta and travels thru the body
venae cavae (superior/inferior vena cava)
two large veins that return blood back to the heart (the right atrium)
What is the strongest part of the heart?
left ventricle bc it is the last step in reaching the aorta.
Between each atrium and ventricle there is what?
a one way valve.
What does this one way valve do?
prevents blood from being forced back up into the atrium when the ventricle contracts.
does the pulmonary artery and aorta also have a one-way valve?
yes, so that the blood does not return to the right ventricle.
and yes so that the blood does not return to the left ventricle.
Cardiac conduction system
pacemaker and a system of specialized muscle cells that conduct electrical pulses that stimulate heart to beat.
Epinephrin released into the blood do what?
Control the hearts rate and strength of contractions
What kind of blood vessel carries blood away from the heart?
artery
What are the different kinds of arteries?
Coronary aorta pulmonary carotid femoral brachial radial posterior tibial dorsalis pedis
Coronary artery
branch off from aorta and supply heart muscles with blood.
Aorta
largest artery. the main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body. The blood leaves the heart through the aortic valve. at the point of navel it splits into iliac arteries
Pulmonary artery
begins at right ventricle, carries oxygen poor blood into the lungs.
Carotid arteries
major arteries of the neck. the artery that is palpating during CPR pulse checks. carries main supply of blood for the head.
Femoral artery
major artery of the thigh and leg. (femoral- femur). pulsations can be felt for this artery between the abdomen and the groin.
Brachial artery
in the upper arm. pulse that is checked during infant CPR
What pulse is checked during infant CPR?
Pulse in the brachial artery
Radial artery
supplied blood to the lower arm. this is the artery felt when taking pulse at the thumb side of the wrist. (radial- radius bone is forearm)
Posterior tibial artery
used when determining circulatory status of the lower extremity. may be palpitated on the posterior aspect of the medial malleolus
Dorsal pedis artery
lies on the top (dorsal portion) of the foot, lateral to the large tendon of the big toe
What is the smallest branch of an artery?
arteriole
Capillaries
tiny blood vessels found throughout the body. where gases, nutrients and waste products are exchanged.
venule
small veins they then merge to bigger veins.
