Chapter 6-Earthquakes Flashcards
What is compression?
When rocks press together
What is tension?
When rocks spread apart in opposite directions becoming thinner in the middle
What is shearing
When rocks slide past each other
What is a normal fault?
When the footwall and the hanging wall slide away from each other
What is a reverse fault?
When the footwall and the hanging wall slide towards each other
What is a strike slip fault?
When to plates slide past each other
What is a P wave?
The first wave in an earthquake, moves side to side
What is a S wave?
The second wave in an earthquake, moves side to side and up and down
What is a surface wave?
The last wave in an earthquake, moves in a squiggly line
What is a seismograph?
Something to measure earthquakes, a pen moves up and down like a heartbeat
What is a tiltmeter?
Something to measure earthquakes, contains 2 water cages and makes sure they are balanced, like a level
What is a creep meter?
Something to measure earthquakes, has a wire stretching across the fault, measures how long it is
What is a laser ranging device?
Something to measure earthquakes, uses a laser to stretch across the fault and times it
What is a GPS satellite?
Something to measure earthquakes, send signals to both sides of faults and times them
What are the two scales to measure earthquakes?
Mercalli, Ricter
