Q

14
Q

Q

What is the CENTRAL ROUTE of persuasion?

16
Q

What is the PERIPHERAL ROUTE of persuasion?

A

when people do not pay attention to the arguments, but are swayed by surface characteristics (who gives the speech, how long it is, etc)

17
Q

What is FEAR-AROUSING COMMUNICATION?

A

a persuasive message that attempts to change people’s attitudes by arousing their fears

18
Q

What are SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES?

A

words or pictures that are not consciously perceived but that supposedly influence people’s judgements, attitudes, and behaviours

19
Q

What is ATTITUDE INOCULATION, and who is this associated with?

A

the process of making people immune to attempts to change their attitudes by exposing them to small doses of the arguments against their position

William McGuire

20
Q

What is COGNITIVE DISSONANCE, and who is this associated with?

A

a feeling of discomfort caused by the realization that one’s behaviour is inconsistent with one’s attitudes or that one holds 2 conflicting attitudes

Leon Festinger

21
Q

What is POST-DECISION DISSONANCE?

A

dissonance that is aroused by making a decision; such dissonance is typically reduced by enhancing the attractiveness of the chosen alternative and devaluing the rejected options

22
Q

What is JUSTIFICATION OF EFFORT?

A

the tendency for individual to increase their liking for something they have worked to attain

23
Q

What is EXTERNAL JUSTIFICATION?

A

a person’s reason or explanation for dissonant behaviour that resides outside of the individual

EX: to receive a reward or avoid punishment; you don’t like a band that your friend loves but you pretend to enjoy the show so they don’t get upset with you

24
Q

What is INTERNAL JUSTIFICATION?

A

the reduction of dissonance by changing something about oneself

EX: one’s attitude or behaviour; your friend wants to quit school to follow this band around, so you look for positive aspects so you can get more on board with the idea

25
What is COUNTERATTITUDINAL BEHAVIOUR?
acting in a way that runs counter to a person's private belief or attitude; we start to believe the lie we've told
26
What is INSUFFICIENT PUNISHMENT?
the dissonance aroused when individuals lack sufficient external justification for having resisted a desired activity or object, usually resulting in individuals devaluing the forbidden activity or object; mild punishment can be more effective in stopping a behaviour EX: a bully obeys an order to stop beating someone up, and dissonance is created > thought becomes "I guess I stopped bc it's not much fun"
27
What is HYPOCRISY INDUCTION?
the arousal of dissonance by having individuals make statements that run counter to their behaviours and then remind them of the inconsistency bw what they are saying and their actual behaviours
28
What is SELF-AFFIRMATION THEORY?
suggests that people will reduce the impact of a dissonance-arousing threat to their self-concept by focusing on and affirming their competence on some dimension unrelated to the threat EX: Yes I have this bad habit, but I am a great friend
