Deaf view of interpreters is often
bad, mistrusting, interpreters have been know to take advantage of the deaf community.
now can interpreters mitigate the harm to Deaf people
be involved with the community, hold other interpreters to a higher standard, join in the humor even if it is against interpreters
the myth of neutrality
interpreter are meant to be neutral as we can but it is impossible to interpreters to completely disregard their biases.
vicarious trauma
trauma that result from observing another person’s traumatic experience
interpreters hold a lot of power but they should not allow power to be confused for
expertise on the deaf community, ASL, deaf education, etc.
according to the book interpreters should take on the role of
ally not advocate
the best way for interpreters to ensure they mitigate harm to the deaf community is to
check yourself!
