Group
Collection of 2 or more people who work with one another regularly to achieve one or more common goals.
Formal groups
Official groups designated by authority to serve a specific purpose. Employees are officially assigned a group role and task, managers are responsible for group performance.
Informal groups
Emerge unofficially and aren’t formally designated as a part of the organisation. E.g friendship groups.
Group purpose
Help meet organisational needs (job skills and knowledge of members is shared, helpful to solve problems), groups can satisfy needs of individual members (provide social interaction and interpersonal fulfilment).
Inter group dynamics
Dynamics that take place between groups oppose to within groups. Factors influencing: status, prestige, competition based reward systems, sharing of resources.
Groups as open systems

Teams
2 or more individuals who work together towards a common objective.
Team effectiveness
Team task level - team organised to carry out specific task
Individual needs level - often hidden behind task drive of team
Team maintenance level - to accomplish task, needs to recognise need to maintain team relationships
Team cohesiveness
Degree to which members are attracted and motivated to remain part of the team.
Self managing teams
Small groups of people empowered to manage themselves and the work they do on a daily basis.
Virtual teams
Challenges include: leadership skills in technology, trust and cohesion issues due to lack of face to face contact, burnout and stress generated to longer/unlimited work hours.
