What is an ethnic group?
Group whose members share certain beliefs, values, habits, customs, and norms because of their common background
What is ethnicity?
Identification with, and feeling part of, an ethnic group and exclusion from certain other groups because of affiliation
What is status?
Any position that determines where someone fits in society
What is achieved status?
Social status based on choices or accomplishments, can be positive or negative
What is ascribed status?
Social status based on limited choice
Why is race not biologically supported?
Biological race would be a geographically isolated subdivision of a species in theory
What is racial classification?
The attempt to assign humans to discrete categories based on common ancestry
What is phenotype?
All of its observable characteristics
What is genotype?
Set of genes that it carries
What is Melanin?
A natural sunscreen produced by skin cells responsible for pigmentation
What did Jablonski and Chaplin explain?
Geographic distribution of skin color involved effects of UV on folate
What is race?
Race is a cultural category rather than a biological reality
What is racism?
Discrimination against an ethnic group assumed to have a biological basis
What is prejudice?
Devaluing a group because of its assumed attributes
