Last king, Tarquin the Proud. A from of government where power rest with the citizens who vote for a leader.
Patricians
Wealthy landowners who wanted power.
Plebeians
Common farmers, artisans and merchants who wanted power.
Tribunes
Representatives elected by plebeians to protect their rights in government.
Consults
Like kings, they commanded the army and directed the government but had limited power.
Senate
Aristocratic branch of government. 300 members were chosen from upper class.
Dictator
In times of crises, a leader appointed to make all decisions and command army but the power lasted only 6 months.
Legions
Large military units, heavily armed foot soldiers.
Punic War
Between Rome and Carthage, 3 wars.
- Control of Sicily, lasted 23 years and ended in the defeat of Carthage.
- Young Cathagian General (Hannibal) who wanted to avenge the defeat. Won a victory but Rome eventually defeated him.
- Rome laid siege on Cathage. The city was set on fire and citizens sold for slavery.
