Geography Greece
Mountainous and the sea and 2000 islands.
The sea shaped Greek civilization as the rivers shaped other civilizations. Black, Aegean and Ionian seas were used for transportation and trade. Natural resources were scarce.
The land of mountains covered much and devised Greece into different regions. Government was based on these little communities and Greeks gave loyalty to their own. Land transportations was difficult and only a small part could be farmed.
With little farmland, little population could be supported.
Climate
Important environmental influence. Varied climate with cooler temps in winter and mild temps in summer. This allowed people to do a lot of outdoor activities as well as public events. They met outdoors to discuss politics and news.
Mycenaean
Indo Eurpeans that migrated and settled in Greece. Mycenae was located in southern Greece on steep rocky ridge with a protective wall 20 feet thick. A warrior king ruled the area.
Minoans
Through trade or war, the Mycenaeans came into coNtact with Minoans. They saw the value of sea trade. Influences from the Minoans: Writing system Decorated vases with Minoan design Formed religious practices Politics Literature The western civilization has its roots in these two.
Trojan War
Mycenaeans fought a two year war with Troy. A Trojian prince had kidnapped Helen the wife of a Greek King.
Dorians
Soon after the Trojian War, the Mycenaean civilization collapsed . Sea raiders attacked and burned cities. The Dorians moved in and spoke a dialect of Greek. They were far less advanced and the economy collapsed. Greeks had lost the art of writing during this time and no records exist for 400 years.
Homer
During the no writing period, history was spoken in the form of stories. Homer was a great story teller and blind man. He composed the epics, poems celebrating heroic deeds. Iiiad, poem of the Trojan war.
Myths
Traditional stories about their Gods. Through these myths, Greeks tried to understand the mysteries of nature and power of human passions. Changes of seasons, jealousy, love, hate, all through now the Gods related to each other.
