What is Culture?
Culture refers to the shared values, beliefs, behaviors, and norms of a group of people. It encompasses language, customs, traditions, and social practices that define a community or society.
Co-cultures
Subgroups within a larger culture that have distinct characteristics but share some commonalities with the dominant culture.
Microcultures
Smaller groups within a culture that have unique cultural traits, often based on factors like ethnicity, religion, or interests.
Collective Self-Esteem:
Culture provides individuals with a sense of identity and belonging, contributing to their self-esteem.
Stereotyping:
Culture can lead to generalized perceptions about different groups, which may result in stereotypes.
Culture as Normative:
Culture establishes norms and expectations for behavior within a society, guiding how individuals interact with each other.
Low context culture vs. high context culture:
Low context cultures rely heavily on explicit communication, while high context cultures depend more on implicit understanding and non-verbal cues.
Low vs. High Power Distance:
The extent to which less powerful members of a society accept unequal power distribution.
Individualism vs. Collectivism:
The degree to which individuals are integrated into groups or expected to look after themselves.
Masculinity vs. Femininity:
The preference for achievement, assertiveness, and material rewards (masculinity) versus cooperation, modesty, and quality of life (femininity).
Low vs. High Uncertainty Avoidance:
The level of comfort with uncertainty and ambiguity within a society.
Long-Term vs. Short-Term Orientation:
The focus on future rewards through perseverance and thrift (long-term) versus respect for tradition and fulfilling social obligations (short-term).
Indulgence vs. Restraint:
The extent to which a society allows relatively free gratification of basic human drives related to enjoying life and having fun (indulgence) versus suppressing gratification and regulating it by strict social norms (restraint).
