41
Q

Characteristics of BLOOD

A

-5L in adults
- circulates within blood vessels
- cells produced in bone marrow by hematopoiesis
-cells = formed elements: RBC, WBC, and platelets

42
Q

Characteristics in PLASMA

A

-55% of whole blood
-90% water, the rest plasma proteins: 1.globulin: 3 types, most common gamma globulin (antibodies)
2. albumin: transport fatty that cannot dissolve in plasma
3. fibrinogen: blood clotting protein

43
Q

ERYTHROCYTES (RBC)

A

-biconcave
-enucleated (nonucleo)
- Red because hemoglobin, contain iron pigment
-120 days lifespan; spleens removes damaged ones or are recycled as iron

44
Q

Leukocytes (WBC)

A
  • protection against pathogens
  • spherical shape with nucleus
  • 5 types, two categories: granulocytes (Ba, Eo, Neu) and agranulocytes=mono-lymphocytes
45
Q

Platelets

A
  • used to be called Thrombocyte
  • smallest blood element
  • Blood clotting, hemostasis.
  • Release thromboplastin + prothrombin = thrombin; which converts fibrinogen to fibrin (meshlike blood clot)
46
Q

Lymphatic and Immune system

A

Consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, thymus gland, tonsils and spleen

  • Collect excess tissue fluid of body
47
Q

Antigen

A

Molecules on outer surface of cell membrane that identify them as friend of foe

48
Q

Blood type A

A
  • Can’t have B or AB
  • Can have A or O
    -anti-B antibody
49
Q

Blood type B

A
  • Can have b or O
  • Can’t have A or AB
  • anti-A antibody
50
Q

Blood type AB

A
  • Can have any type of blood
    Is the universal recipient
51
Q

Blood type O

A
  • Can only have O
  • Universal donor
  • both antibodies
52
Q

Rh factor

A

-Person with Rh is (+) type blood
-Person without Rh is (-) type blood; has anti-Rh antibodies
- Rh+ can have Rh+ and Rh-
- Rh- can have Rh- only
