Functions
Qián Hú 前胡
- Directs qi downward and dispels phlegm For cough or wheezing with thick sputum due to turbid clogging of the Lungs
- Disperses and scatters wind-heat For the exterior patterns of externally-contracted wind-heat with H/A and cough. Most suitable when wind-heat constrains the Lungs
Functions
Chuān Bèi Mŭ 川貝母
- Clears heat and transforms phlegm
For many types of cough, chiefly chronic cough, cough w/ signs of fire from yin deficiency, cough w/ slight sputum difficult to expectorate or cough w/ blood-streaked sputum. It is most effective in treating cough accompanied by constrained qi, manifested in a reduced appetite & a stifling sensation in the chest & upper abdomen. - Clears heat and dissipates nodules For disorders in which phlegm-fire collects and produces nodules, sores. Swellings, scrofula and Lung or breast abscess.
Functions
Zhè Bèi Mŭ 淛貝母
- Clears and transforms phlegm-heat For acute Lung heat patterns with productive cough
- Clears heat and dissipates nodules For phlegm-fire which congeals and causes neck swellings. Also important for Lung and breast abscess and swellings.
Functions
Guā Lóu 瓜蔞
- Clears heat and transforms phlegm-heat For heat-induced coughs with sputum that is thick and difficult to expectorate. Can be used as a stand-alone herb, especially in children.
- Unbinds the chest and dissipates nodules For conditions in which qi accumulates in the chest leading to a stifling or distended sensation, constriction, pain or pressure in the diaphragm.
- Reduces abscesses and dissipates nodules Primarily for abscesses involving the Lungs, Intestines or breast.
Functions
Guā Lóu Pí 栝蔞皮
- Clears the Lungs and transforms phlegm For phlegm-heat in the chest or dry cough with difficult-to-expectorate sputum and dry throat due to wind-heat.
- Regulates the qi and expands the chest For chest painful obstruction, clumping in the chest, and the early stages of breast abscess.
Functions
Guā Lóu Rén 栝蔞仁
- Clears and transforms phlegm-heat For phlegm-heat cough. Both cools and moistens. Especially useful for cough with chest pain and thick, difficult-to-expectorate sputum.
- Expands the chest For accumulation of phlegm in the chest leading to a stifling sensation, pain or diaphragmatic pressure
- Moistens the Intestines For dry constipation, especially when it appears in a pattern of Lung heat with dry mouth, thirst and irritability.
- Promotes healing of sores Used adjunctively for breast abscess and swelling as well as sores that have not yet supporated.
