Chapter 55- Conservation Biology Flashcards
Genetic Diversity
The total genetic information contained within all individuals of a species.
Species Diversity
Based on the variety of species on Earth.
Ecosystem Diversity
The array of biotic communities in a region along with abiotic components.
Biodiversity Hot Spot
Regions that are extraordinarily rich in biodiversity.
Endemic Species
Species that are found in an area and nowhere else.
Exotic Species
Nonnative competitors, diseases, or predators.
Endangered Species
Species which are almost certain to go extinct.
Habitat Destruction
Destruction of ecosystems by human efforts,
Habitat Fragmentation
Fragmenting larger ecosystems into smaller, isolated ones.
Biomass
The total amount of fixed carbon.
Ecosystem Services
Processes that increase the quality of the abiotic environment.
Resistance
A measure of how much a community is affected by a disturbance.
Resilience
A measure of how quickly a community recovers following a disturbance.
Sustainability
The managed use of resources at a rate only as fast as the rate at which they are replaced.
