Chapter 50- Introduction To Ecology Flashcards
Population
A group of individual of the same species living in the same area at the same time.
Ecology
The study of how organisms interact with their environment.
Community
Species that interact with each other within a particular area.
Ecosystem
All of the organisms in a particular region along with nonliving components.
Abiotic
Not-living
Biotic
Living
Conservation Biology
The effort to study, preserve, and restore threatened populations, communities, and ecosystems.
Turnovers
The mixing of lake water due to air temperatures.
Thermocline
A gradient in temperature.
Productivity
The total amount of carbon fixed by photosynthesis per unit area per year.
Littoral zone
Seashore: shallow waters along the shore.
Limnetic zone
Lake; offshore, water that receives enough light to support photosynthesis.
Benthic Zone
Depths; the substrate/bottom of the ocean.
Photic zone
Regions of littoral, limnetic, and benthic zones that receive sunlight.
Aphotic Zone
Portions of a lake or pond that do not receive sunlight.
Plankton
Cyanobacteria, algae, and other microscopic organisms.
Detritus
Dead organic matter
Wetlands
Shallow-water habitats where the soil is saturated with water for at least part of the year.
Emergent Vegetation
Plants that grow above the surface of the water.
Bogs
Water habitats with little or no water flow.
Marshes
Lack trees and feature grasses, reeds, and other nonwoody plants.
Swamps
Dominated by trees and shrubs.
