Chapter 5 Terminology Flashcards
pH scale
A number scale that indicates how acidic or basic a solution is
Goes up in powers of 10
Not linear it is a logarithmic scale
pH stands for power or potential of hydrogen
Acid base indicator
Any substance that changes colour in the presence of an acid or a base
Most popular is litmus paper, plant extract
Universal indicator
A mixture of chemicals that changes colours through a wide range of pH bales
Ph meter us even more precise
Neutral
Any substance with. pH of 7 and is neither an acid or a base
Acid
A substance such that when in an aqueous solution has a ph of over 7
Base
A substance that has a ph of more than 7 when in an aurora solution
Oxyacids
Compounds formed when a hydrogen ion combines with a poly atomic ion that contains oxygen
Neutralization
A chemical reaction between an acid and a base that produces water and a salt
Precipitate
A suspension of small solid particles formed during a chemical reaction
