4.2 Notes Flashcards
1
Q
Properties of ionic compounds
A
High melting points solid at room temp as the ions are attracted to each other
Most are hard brittle and can be crushed
Form crystals in alternating formation of positive and negative
When crystals broken they form the clevage point and are flat
Dissolve in water to form solutions that conduct electricity as ions are released into the water
2
Q
Diatomic elements common
A
Hydrogen Oxygen Fluorine Bromine Iodine Nitrogen Chlorine
3
Q
Uncommon diatomic elements
A
Diphosphorus
Disulfer
Dilithium
4
Q
Properties of molecular compounds
A
Can be solid liquid or gas at room temp Often soft Have relatively low melting points Dissolve in water to form solutions that are not good conductors of electricity Ex Sugar Water Hydrogen peroxide Carbon dioxide
