10.1 Flashcards
Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another
Crest
The highest point of a wave
Trough
The lowest point of a wave
Rest position
The level of water when there are no waves
WVelength
The distance from one place in a wave to the next similar place
Symbol is lambda measured in meters
Amplitude
The wave height from the rest position to the crest or trough
Energy transferred depends on the amplitude the larger the amplitude the more energy that is carried
Frequency
The rate of repetition of a wave the higher the frequency the more energy that is passed along
Measured in hertz which is cycles per second
Electromagnetic radiation
A wave pattern made of electric and magnetic fields that can travel through empty space
Electromagnetic spectrum
The range of electromagnetic radiation
Model
A representation of an object event or process based on our observations of its characteristics and properties
A property
A attribute common to all substances or objects of the same group
Wave middle of light
Model of light comparing light to water waves
Prism
Transparent glass or plastic object with flat polished sides
Visible spectrum
The range of different colours
Additive colour theory
White light is composed of different colours of light able to produce white light by combining only three colours
