Ophthalmologist
Physician who specializes in eye care
Cornea
The outer surface layer of your eye that is made up of a transparent layer of tissue
Pupil
Transparent area in the centre of the eye that allows light to pass into the eye
Iris
Circular coloured band of muscle in the eye thatcontrols the size of the pupil and the amount of light that enters
Retina
Inner lining at the back of the eye that acts as a projection screen for light rays entering the eye
Photoreceptors
Cells in the retina that are sensitive to light
Rod cells
Cells located in the retina that help detect shapes and movement in low light situations
Cone cells
Photoreceptors cells in the eye that detect colour
Blind spot
The place where the optic nerve attaches to the retina
Optic nerve
Nerve that connects the eye to the brain
Far sighted
People who can see far objects clearly but struggle with close objects
Near sighted
People who can see near objects but can’t see far objects
Astigmatism
The eyeball is unable to form a clear imitate because of the irregular shape of the cornea or lens
Laser eye surgery
A general term for several different kinds of procedures that involve correcting vision by reshaping the cornea using energy from a laser
