Chapter 5 - Quantifying Chemistry Flashcards
what is avogadros number?
6.022 x 10^23
what is the symbol for avogadros number
N_A
how was the relative mass scale derived?
Carbon-12 was used as it was stable, abundant and had the same amount of protons,neutrons and electrons. Scientists estimate that in 12g of carbon-12, there is 6.02 x 10^23 atoms. This is now known as one mole. So, an elements molar mass is the mass of one mole of it relative to the 12g of Carbon-12 used originally.

grams you have
————————–
#moles|||||||molar mass
no of molecules of a compound=
number of moles x avogadros number
molar mass=
periodic table mass
periodic table masses added up for all of the compound
no of moles=
grams you have/molar mass
grams you have=
