Q

how was the relative mass scale derived?

A

Carbon-12 was used as it was stable, abundant and had the same amount of protons, neutrons and electrons. Scientists estimate that in 12g of carbon-12, there is 6.02 x 10^23 atoms. This is now known as one mole. So, an elements molar mass is the mass of one mole of it relative to the 12g of Carbon-12 used originally.
