Communicative autonomy
The capacity for each party in an encounter to be responsible for and in control of his or her own communication
Micro level contributions
Refers to the communicative event (the encounter)
Macro-level contributions
Refers to the big picture. How interpreter’s decisions, behaviors, and actions, and the sum of all of them impact not only the encounter itself but also the social context that informs the encounter.
Intercultural mediators
Help people with different cultural backgrounds reach a better understanding of each other’s perspectives
Message transfer acts:
The intermediary conveys the messages of each of the parties in the language they don’t speak with the objective of eliminating the language barrier
Generative acts:
The intermediary addresses the parties to offer his/her own messages with the goal of helping them overcome barriers to communication
Advocacy
Taking action or speaking up on behalf of a service user whose safety, health, well-being, or human dignity is at risk, with the purpose of preventing such harm.
Harm
Refers to an injury or to damage. Consequence of being exposed to circumstances that affect your health or well-being.
Hazard
Source of potential harm. Something that can become dangerous.
Risk
A chance you might encounter harm
Occupational hazards
Variety of circumstances and factors that can negatively affect a professional’s physical or mental well-being
