Q

ESSAY: Explain why Washington issued the Neutrality Proclamation in 1793.

A

-some people supported Britain, but others supported France in their fight; no agreement on who was right
-U.S. too weak to get sucked into another war, and if we picked a side, we’d get attacked or have to fight
-needed to publicly say we were neutral to keep that from happening

22
Q

ESSAY: Compare & contrast the arguments of Hamilton & Jefferson regarding the Bank of the United States.

A

Jefferson: strict constructionist–only get to do what the Constitution specifically says govt. can do; Constitution doesn’t give permission for a bank
-bank would make wealthy even more wealthy, but he believed govt. was supposed to help the “common man”
Hamilton: loose constructionist–govt. needs to do whatever is “necessary & proper” to fulfill their duties; he thought Bank was necessary
-he believed the bank would help govt. be efficient with collecting taxes & paying off debts

23
Q

ESSAY: Summarize the reasons why John Adams was not reelected as president in the election of 1800.

A

-war between Britain & France was escalating
-French seized American ships, so people pushed for war against France
-Adams lost support from his party b/c he didn’t want war, but others did
-Federalists as a whole lost support from the public b/c of their support for the Alien & Sedition Acts
*he wasn’t ever really that popular anyway, even if he was a decent leader

24
Q

ESSAY: Summarize the purpose & results of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

A

Purpose:
-explore new land & the Missouri River
-map route to the Pacific Ocean
-look for Northwest Passage (water route across America)
-study geography, weather, plants, & animals
-meet & set up good relationships w/American Indians

Results:
-documented route–maps
-found many new plants & animals
-finally proved there was no Northwest Passage
-set the stage for later movement west

25
Q

ESSAY: Summarize the Monroe Doctrine in your own words. What was its effect?

A

Summary: Europe needs to stay on their own side of the ocean. They can’t get back old colonies or start new ones in the Western Hemisphere. The U.S. will take care of watching over Latin America. The U.S. will keep its nose out of European conflicts.

Effect: The Doctrine was enforced on multiple occasions to keep European powers out of the Western Hemisphere. The U.S. sent troops to Caribbean nations in order to restore order during conflicts.
