Q

Describe the views of the British govt. and American colonists on the Proclamation of 1763.

A

British-approved it b/c they created it
-thought it would protect American Indians & keep colonists safe (no more fights over land in the west)
-still thought colonists had plenty of land closer to coast (easier to keep control of them, too)

colonists-opposed b/c they felt entitled to western lands
-didn’t care about protecting American Indian lands
-angry about having to pay for British troops needed to enforce new proclamation

Q

Summarize the events that led to the Boston Tea Party

A

-British tea sales dropped b/c colonists could get cheaper tea from Dutch & French
-Tea Act of 1773 would actually LOWER the price of tea (cheaper than smuggled), so British hoped colonists would buy British tea now
-colonists thought it was a trick to get them to accept Parliament’s ability to tax them
-colonists boycotted British tea & stopped ships from unloading tea
-final straw was Mass. gov. saying no to colonists’ demand that ships of tea be sent out of British Harbor

-Stamp Act Congress-sent petitions to King George & Parliament—no taxation w/o representation
-boycott British goods & services–harmed British merchants–some even asked Parliament to back off
-colonists wanted free enterprise system where govt. stays out of economy (setting prices for goods)
-Parliament repealed Stamp Act but passed Declaratory Act saying they had the right to tax the colonies in “all cases whatsoever”
