Chapter 4D Flashcards
What is the pH dependent on?
The H+ concentration.
What can happen if the pH is impacted?
The proteins denature and their shape changes as a result they are unable to perform their functions normally.
What is the ideal pH of the human ECF?
7.4 but the range is (6.8-7.7)
What happens if the pH causes the hemoglobin to change shape?
The O2 is not able to be transported to cells and tissues in the human body.
Where is the partial pressure of O2 high?
In the lungs
Where is the partial pressure of O2 low?
In the cells
What is the pH of the capillaries depending on metabolic activity?
7.2
In which direction is the equation favoured when the CO2 concentration decreases?
To the left
When the CO2 concentration decreases what happens to the pH?
It decreases
When the pH increases what is this known as?
Alkylosis
In which direction is the equation favoured when the CO2 concentration increases?
To the right
When the CO2 concentration increases what happens to the pH?
It increases
When the pH decreases what is this known as?
Acidosis
What is the primary driver of respiration?
The CO2 levels.
