Chapter 3A Flashcards
Before plants what colonized the land?
Fungi
What were some of the reasons that made organisms leave the water to go to the land?
1.) No competition
2.) Unlimited resources
3.) Light access
4.) No or less predators
4.) Once adapted you could grow on land
What were the first terrestrial animals?
Anthropods or bugs
When did sea life evolve?
3.5 bya
When did terrestrial life evolve?
500 mya
What is dessication?
Drying out or a lack of water
What is the most recent deviation of plant species?
Angiosperm
What is the adaptation against needing to acquire gas and adapting a mechanism?
The stomata which are pores that are controlled by specialized cells.
What provides weight or a support strategy?
Vascular tissues that can transport the water and nutrients and provide structural integrity.
What is the cuticle layer?
The skin of the plant with a waxy layer that prevents the loss of water and pathogenic attacks.
What are the specialized cells that control the stoma?
Guard cells
As the vascular tissue evolved what happened to the efficiency and width?
Both increased
Which land plants have tracheids?
Gymnosperm
Which land plants have vessels?
Angiosperms
How are vessels and tracheids different?
Tracheids are longer but thinner and the vessels are shorter and wider.
