Chapter 3C Flashcards
What is needed to generate ATP?
Oxygen is needed for aerobic respiration in the mitochondria of animals.
In order for gasses to be exchanged what is required?
For the gasses to be dissolved in the solution.
When is it harder to remove CO2?
In water the removal of CO2 is easier than in air.
What is required for gas exhange in water energy wise?
More energy is needed to pass over and exchange gas in water than in air.
Why is it harder to remove CO2 in air than in water?
Even though air has a lower viscosity and density the concentration of O2 is higher and is therefore more difficult to remove CO2 from it.
Where can sound travel faster?
In water
Where can light travel faster?
In air
Why does sound travel faster in water?
This is because the water is less compressible than air because it is more dense and viscous so the waves can travel faster through it.
What impacts the loudness of sound?
Amplitude
What impacts the pitch of sound?
Frequency
How does olfaction occur?
There are hairlike structures within the nasal passageway that protrude through pores which allow the odor molecules to enter they transport through fluid and bind to receptors.
How is sound transmitted?
Through waves which generate vibrations which are then registered by the eardrum or tympanal membrane.
How is the air on both sides of the tympanal membrane regulated?
Through the eustachian tube.
Where do the vibrations go specifically?
The oval window.
Where did the inner ear bone evolve from?
The jaw of previous animals.
