drug regimen
A
therapy must contain multiple drugs- usually four (INH, RIF, EMB, PZA)until sensitivity comes back
-drugs must be taken regularly
-therapy must continue for longer period of time
2 phases of tx: initial-2 months (sensitivity comes back may be given different regimen); continuation: 4-7 months of therapy

tx for speciality patient groups
A
pregnant/lactation: tx with INH and RIF, pyroxidine 25 mg/day; INH increased risk of hepatitis
pediatric: may progress to milary TB or CNS dz, INH and RIF, pyroxidine 25 mg/day
HIV positive: may not have positive PPD, extrapulmonary TB common, tx 4 drug regime

prophylactic tx
A
- PPD positive but no symptoms
- INH only for 3-4 months
- report to health department

pathophysiology
A
- caused by m. tuberculosis, slowly growing
- inhaled into alveolus and spreads from lungs
- spread by aerosolization or lung secretions
