chapter 24-fluoroquinolones Flashcards
1
Q
pharmacodynamics of fluroquinolones
A
- interferes with bacterial enzymes needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
- not to be used for kids under 18
2
Q
fluoroquinolones
A
- broad spectrum abx
- names: “….-floxin” i.e. ciprofloxin, levofloxin, etc
- resistance over prescribing-no longer effective agains gonorrhea or TB
3
Q
pharmacokinetics and ADRs of fluroquinolones
A
- well absorbed-take on empty stomach (food delays absorption)
- not for children
- spontaneous tendon rupture-could be delayed
4
Q
clinical use of fluroquinolones
A
- complicated UTI-pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial prostatis
- pneumonia/chronic bronchitis exacerbation
- PCN resistant s. pneumoniae, skin infections/bone and joint infections, infectious diarrhea
5
Q
monitoring on fluroquinolones
A
- prolonged use of moxifloxacin-ECG shows syncope or torsades de point
- patients with epilepsy, alcohol abuse, or on theophylline-monitored for seizures, CNS irritability
6
Q
Drug to drug reactions with fluroquinolones T.A.D.
A
drug reactions with: T: theophylline A: anticoagulants D: digoxin -st. johns wart can have increased photosensitivity
