Chapter 4.1 The Phenotypic Expression of Genes Flashcards
Define gene
A unit of heredity that transmit information from one generation to the next
What does it mean when a gene is expressed?
Its expressed when a gene is read, transcribed and translated into a protein
Define phenotype
The actual observable form taken by a specific feature in a particular individual, based on their genotype and influenced by the environment
Define heredity
Heredity is the transmission of traits from one generation to the next
Define variation
The diversity of genetic and phenotypic traits within and between populations
What are the three mechanisms that produce variation?
-Environmental factors
-Mutation
-Sexual reproduction
Name the main sources of genotypic variation
Mutations and sexual reproduction
State the two mechanisms of phenotypic variation
Genotype and environment
