Chapter 40- Antiviral Drugs Flashcards
What is the process of viral Fusion?
Virions attach themselves to host cells in preparation for infecting the cells.
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS):
Infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which weakens the host’s I.S., giving rise to opportunistic infections
P652
Layers of a virus particles:
- Envelope
2.
4 routes of viral entry:
- Inhalation through resp. tract
- Ingestion via GI tract
- Transplacentally
- Inoculation: sexual contact, blood transfusions, needles, organ transplantation, & bites
What is the cytopathic effect?
The changes in the cell associated with viral replication
What is viral teansformation?
Mutation of the host cell DNA or RNA and can result in malignant (cancerous) host cells.
P 652
What are oncogenic viruses?
Viruses that can induce cancer in a host cell by changing the cell DNA or RNA.
P 652
Explain non-specific immune response to viral infection:
Phagocytosis of viral particles by leukocytes; release of cytokines from leukocytes; cell-mediated: does not involve anti-bodies that are specific for a given antigen;
P 652
Explain specific immune response to viruses:
Includes the production of anti-bodies from B lymphocytes (B cells), immunoglobulins. Also called humoral immunity.
