Chapter 4: Tissues Flashcards
Mucous membrane
Line every body service that opens directly to the exterior. Able to trap dust and bacteria.
Tissue
Group of similar cells working to perform a specific function
Cutaneous membrane
Known as the skin
Contains epithelial tissue resting on top of connective tissue
Serous membrane
Lines some body cavities
Secrete fluid to prevent friction
Parietal layer
Serous membrane that lines the walls of the cavity
Visceral layer
Serous membrane that covers the organ
Four categories of tissues
Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous
Epithelial cells
Continuous sheet of tightly packed cells. Covers the body surfaces, lines its cavities and forms certain glands
Three epithelial cells shapes
Squamous “flat”
Cuboidal “cube”
Columnar “cylindrical”
Three types of epithelial cell layers
Simple “one”
Pseudostratified “appears to be many”
Stratified “stacked”
Exocrine gland
Secrete their products through a duct and then exit the body
Endocrine glands
Secrete hormones often directly into the blood
Connective tissue
Widespread and highly varied tissue. Function is to support, bind and protect.
Nervous tissue
Has high degree of excitability and connectivity. It communicates rapidly with other parts of the body.
Muscle tissue
Contracts in response to stimulation
