Chapter 4-The dilemmatics approach to applied research design Flashcards
What is the difference between noise and confound? No answer
…
Why would a researcher prefer a quasi-experiment over an experimental design? no answer
…
What is cluster sampling?
A sampling technique in which the investigator first selects several sub-groups of potential participants and then randomly samples from these subsets.
What is a confound?
Some additional variable that affects the dependent variable and varies systematically with the independent variables.
What is a correlational research?
A study in which the investigator measures several variables and assesses the relationship between these variables.
What is a dependent variable?
The variable that is being measured (expected effect)
What is a dilemmatic approach?
Views research as a series of choices among multiple research designs that each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
What is an independent variable?
The variable in an experiment that is manipulated by the experimenter (expected cause)
What is mundane realism?
The degree that physical setting in an experiment is similar to the real-world setting in which the independent and dependent variables are most likely to operate.
What is noise?
Nuisance (besvär) variables that are evenly distributed across conditions and influence the dependent variable.
What is procedural confound?
A confound that occurs when the researcher unwittingly varies two or more variables at once.
