Chapter 4 - Practice and feedback Flashcards
1
Q
Diminishing returns
A
- States that as a performer becomes more capable in their skill performance and progresses to the later stages of learning
- Gradual reduction in the rate of improvement in skill performance in response to practice
2
Q
Practice distribution
A
- Refers to the ratio of time spent actively practising compared to time spent resting
- Is an important aspect in facilitating movement skill learning
3
Q
Massed practice
A
- Involves little or no rest between repeat performances of a skill.
- As such, massed practice is sometimes referred to as continuous practice.
- Ex. a golfer working on their swing by hitting multiple shots one after the other
4
Q
Distributed practice
A
- Sessions are broken up into smaller practice intervals, interspersed with rest periods
- There is either more rest time than work time or at least equal parts work and rest
5
Q
Blocked practice
A
- Involve practising the same skill repetitively in the same practice conditions for a set period of time
- Ex. A volleyball coach works on their player’s serve for a 15-minute time period before working on the player’s dig for 15 minutes
- Blocked practice sessions have relatively low levels of practice variability.
6
Q
Serial practice
A
- Different skills are rehearsed but in a fixed and predictable sequence
- Ex. a tennis coach makes their junior players foreheads, then backhands, then volleys and then returning to foreheads for repetition
7
Q
Random practice
A
- a variety of skills are rehearsed within the same session
- no one skill is worked on for a defined period of time or in a repetitive manner
- rather, skills are practised in combination and rehearsed in random order
- Ex. a golfer working on their putting stroke practises different length putts in random order
8
Q
Intrinsic feedback
A
- Is sensory information the learner receives directly from skill execution
- Internal feedback, feels and thoughts when performing a skill
9
Q
Argumented feedback
A
- Is information about a skill performance that comes from an external source
- Information from a coach whilst performing a skill
10
Q
Knowledge of performance
A
- refers to feedback that provides information about the process of performing the skill
Ex, a golfer is able to recognise they have a problem with their weight transferral after watching a video of their swing
11
Q
Knowledge of results
A
- is information about the outcome of your skill performance
- Using the previous example, the golfer receives knowledge of results regarding the golf shot by seeing the resulting ball flight and where the ball lands.
12
Q
Terminal feedback
A
Is information that is given at the completion of the skill
13
Q
Concurrent feedback
A
is information that is given during a skill performance
