Chapter 4 Part 2 Flashcards
Large body muscles responsible for movement. Long and thin. Usually called muscle fiber. Do not divide. New fibers are produced by stem cells.
Skeletal muscle
Specialized for contraction.
Produces all body movement.
Muscle tissue
Found only in the heart.
Called cardiocytes.
Form branching networks connected at intercalated discs.
Regulated by pacemaker cells.(release electrical signals for the heart to contract.)
Cardiac muscles
Found in walls of hollow, contracting organs.
Small and tapered.
Can divide and regenerate.
Smooth muscle
Specialized for conducting electrical impulses.
Rapidly senses internal or external environment.
Processes information and controls responses.
Concentrated in the central nervous system. (Brain, spinal chord)
Neural tissue
The tissues first response to injury.
Inflammation
Swelling.
Redness.
Heat.
Pain.
Signs and symptoms of inflammation.
Can be triggered by:
Trauma.
Infection.
Inflammatory response.
Tissue destruction.
Necrosis.
Pus trapped In an enclosed area
Abscess
Contains the nucleus and nucleolus
Cell body
Short branches extending from the cell body.
Receive incoming signals
Dendrites
Long, thin extension of the cell body.
Carries outgoing electrical signals to their destination.
Axon
