-Significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning
-Exists concurrently with other deficits in adaptive behavior
-Manifested during developmental period that adversely affects child’s educational performance
-IQ less than or equal to 70
Classification of Intellectual Disabilities
mild: 50-55 up to 70
moderate: 35-40 to 50-55
severe: 20-25 to 35-40
profound: below 20-25
Assessing Adaptive Behavior
Conceptual: using language for speaking, Concepts such as time and counting
Social: following rules, getting along with others, etc
Practical: activities of daily living
Characteristics 4
-children with disabilities show significant delay in development
-CNS damage, health conditions, other disabilities
-slow learning rates, poor memory, attention problems, difficulty maintaining and generalizing what they have learned, poor motivation
-limitations in self-care and daily living skills and social relationships

1% if adaptive behavior is considered

Educational Approaches 2
-functional academic targets (most useful parts of reading, writing, math, etc)
-Skills that increase independence and would be detrimental if not learned
Task Analysis
breaking down complex or multistep skills into smaller, easier to learn subtasks
Systematic feedback
positive reinforcement for correct responses
error correction for incorrect responses (specific, immediate, frequent)
