Chapter 4 Flashcards
The Central Nervous system
It includes the brain and the spinal cord.
Receives, processes, interprets and stores incoming sensory info.
List the two parts of the peripheral nervous system
- Somatic Nervous System
2. Autonomic Nervous system
Name the two parts of the Autonomic Nervous System
- Sympathetic Nervous System
2. Parasympathetic Nervous System
The Peripheral Nervous System
It contains neural structures that lie outside of the brain and spinal cord. Handles the input and output of senses and motor nerves
Somatic Nervous System
Consists of nerves connected to sensory receptors and skeletal muscles that permit voluntary action
Autonomic Nervous System
Regulates the functioning of blood vessels, glands, and internal organs
Sympathetic Nervous System
Prepares your body for action and energy output
Parasympathetic Nervous System
It slows your body down and maintains a state of tranquility
List the 3 main parts of a neuron and its function
- Dendrite: Acts as an antenna by receiving the signal from other neurons and sending them to the rest of the cell body
- Cell body: Keeps the neuron alive and determines whether or not it will fire.
- Axon: Fiber that conducts impulses away from the body and towards other neurons
Glial Cells
They support and insulate neurons
They do not send nerve impulses
Name 6 Neurotransmitters
- Serotonin
- Dopamine
- Acetylcholine
- Norepinephrine
- GABA
- Glutamate
Serotonin
Controls sleep, hunger suppression, and mood
Undersupply: trouble sleeping and food cravings
Dopamine
Associated with concentrated motor skills and feeling pleasures
undersupply: Parkinsons and depression
Acetylcholine
Controls muscle contractions, arousal, regulation of memory and emotions
undersupply: Alzheimers and memory loss
Norepinephrine
Regulates heart rate promotes SNS responses and formation and retrieval of memories
oversupply: hyperactive stress
