What is subculture?
Within society, there are groups that for the most part follow the culture of their society but also hold in common with others different cultural ideas.
What are cultures?
Cultures coincide with national or political boundaries. People living in one country have a different culture to other countries.
What is a race and ethnic group?
Race- group of people are biologically similar.
Ethnic- group of people who share a common cultural heritage usually based on common national origin and language.
What are in-groups and out-groups?
In-groups: are acceptable groups
Out-groups: are uncomfortable groups
How do individualistic and collectivistic cultures differ?
Individualistic cultures tend to place a higher value on the individual than on the group.
Collectivistic cultures tend to place more value on the group.
What does ethnocentrism mean?
We use the standards common in our own culture to judge the behavior and culture of other people.
What is an uncertainty oriented person?
They integrate new and old ideas and change their belief accordingly. They want to understand themselves and others in their environment
What is a certainty oriented person?
They like to hold onto traditional beliefs and have a tendency to reject ideas that are different. They tend to maintain a sense of self by not examining themselves or their behavior.
