Chapter 4 Flashcards
abundant start shaped cells that form barrier between capillaries and neurons; control chemical environment of brain
astrocyte
phagocytose bacterial cells and celllular debris in the CNS
microglia
line cavities of brain and spinal cord; circulate cerebrospinal fluid
ependymal cells
wrap up nerve fiber axons in the CNS; produce myelin sheath
oligodendrocytes
form myelin sheaths around nerve fibers in the PNS
schwann cells
act as protective, cushioning cells for the peripheral neuron cell bodies
satellite cells
type of cell motor and associated neurons are; most common structural type
multipolar
lowest part of brain stem; merges into spinal cord
contains important control center for: heart rate, blood pressure, swallowing/vomiting, breathing
medulla oblongata
modifies activity of respiratory centers in medulla
pons
reflex center for vision and hearing/ made of nerve fibers
midbrain
emotions, regulates secretions of hormones from pituitary gland, helps regulate temp, sleep, water balance, metabolism
hypothalamus
relay station for sensory impulses, transfers inpulse to correct localization for interpretation
thalamus
regulates skeletal muscle movements
basal nuclei
made of thalamus and hypothalamus
diencephalon
primary motor area, voluntary control of skeletal muscles, sends impulses; involved in ability to speak; problem solve judge, understand language
frontal lobe
