Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is a solvent?
the dissolving medium of a solution, it is normally the componet of a solution present in the greater amount
What are solutes?
A substance dissolved ina. solvent to form a solution
What is an electrolyte?
A solute that produces ions in solution, an electrolytic solution conducts an electric current
Ex:NaCl
What is a nonelectrolyte?
a substance that does not ionize in water and consequently dissolves to form a nonconducting solution
Ex: C12H22O11
How does a ionic compound dissolve in water?
each ion separtes from the solid strucutre and dispereses throughought the solution
What is solvation?
the clustering of solvent molecules around a solute particle
What does solvation help do?
stabilize the ions in solution and prevents cations and anions from recombining
What are strong electrolytes?
A substance that is completlye ionized in solution
Ex: NaCl
What are usually strong electrolytes?
strong acids, strong bases, and most salts
What are weak electrolytes?
a substance that only partly ionizes in solution
Ex: Ch3COOH
How do you write the reaction of a weak eelctroltye?
compound double arrows one ion + another ion
What is chemical equilibrium?
a state od dynamic balance in which the rate of formation of the products of a reaction from the reactants equals the rate of formation of the reactants from the products
How do we write the equation of a strong electrolyte?
Compound single arrow ion + ion
what are precipitation reactions?
a reaction that occurs between substances in solutuon in which one of the products is insoluble
What is a percipitate?
an insoluble solid formed by a reaction in solution
What is solubility?
the amount of a substance that dissolves in a given quanity of solvent at a given temp to form a saturated solution
What is a metathesis reaction?
the first element in the first compound form with the second element of the second compound the secon element of the first compound form with the first element of the second compound.
What is the molecualr equation?
same as the chemical equation shows the compounds together
What is the complete ionic equation?
write out all of the ions for the aq compounds
What is the net ionic equation?
wriotu out all of the ions for the aq solutions and then cross out the specator ions
What are acids?
a substance that is able to donate a H+ ion and increase the concentration of H+ aq when it dissolves in water
What do they call acids?
proton donors
How do you name a acid by its protons?
Ex: H2SO4
by the number of H in it
diprotic acid
Is H2SO4 a strong or weak electrolyte?
strong electrolyte
What are bases?
substances that accept H+ ions
What do bases usually produce when dissolved?
OH- ions
Is ammonia(NH3) a base or acid?
base
Is NH3 a weak or strong electrolyte?
weak electrolyte
Is HF a weak or strong acid?
weak acid
Is HCl a strong or weak acid?
strong
