define “nationality”
It is the sharing of a common history, set of traditions practices, languages and resident area. It can be expressed through lifestyle choices such as the types of sports played and appreciated, preference for certain cuisines and choice of music.
Example of “nationality”
Singaporeans celebrate National Day on ( August every year to mak the country’s independence and progress as a nation.
How does “nationality” shape a person’s identity?
The sharing of a common identity makes citizens have a sense of belnging as they speak the same language and have the same history. This makes people have similar lifestyles, which will be unique to that nationality.
Define “race”
The classification according to physical characteristics that are biological in nature.
Example of “race”
Indians have dark skin, Chinese have lighter yellow skin, and Westerners have fair skin.
Define “ethnicity”
One’s ancestry, cultural practices, languages, customs, food and dressing that are associated with an ethnic group.
Example of “ethnicity”
Miao and Hui communities in China have different ethnicities, with unique dressing that are associated with an ethnic group.
How does “race and ethnicity” shape a person’s identity?
A unique race and ethnicity influences the practices and beliefs of a person. For example, the Mother Tongue language each person studies in school is based on their ethnicity. It influences the language the person knows how to speak.
Define “race and religion”
It is an organised collection of attitudes, beliefs, practices, world views and often, worship of a single or multiple gods. Religions may be determined by birth or choice. They usually have a story or account of event s that gives meaning to life or explains the origin of life.
Example of “‘religion”
Christianity: Christians go to church every Sunday, celebrate Christmas, pray to Jesus.
How does “religion” shape a person’’s identity?
Main religions in Singapore emphasise compassion, sensitivity and helping others. They will also need to carry out religious practices such as praying and going to places worship.
Define “Socio-economic status”.
It is an economic situation shared by a group of people and some determinants are occupation, income, education and ownership of wealth.
Example of “Socio-economic status”
People with high SES participate in sports such as polo and eat at high-end restaurants. Poeple with lower SES engage in sports like football or basketball and eat at coffeeshops or at home.
How does “Socio-conomic status” shape a person’s identity?
A person’s SES affects the choice of food, housing, entertainment and activities, also influencing their circle of friends and social network.
