Q

Give positive and negative examples of homogenisation.

A

+ve: Macdonalds has brought Americans of different backgrounds together as all of them have tried the iconic “Big Mac”.

American influences have been spread through their movies, which generate up to 29,2% of the global entertainment industry. Some countries like China do not like this, so they have blackout days (no foreign film days) and a restriction of up to 34 foreign films a year.

Q

GDExA cultural homogenisation

A

G: The economical exchanges in a global economy enabled by globalisation have increased access to and consumption of goods and services, facilitating the exchange of cultures in areas such as entertainment and food.

D: Cultural homogenisation is the process by which local cultures are changed by forieng cultures to become more and more similar with aspects of foreign cultures.

Ex: Every day, hundreds of thousands of customers are served near identical coffee in over 21000 near identical stores in over 65 countries/regions. The popularity of Starbucks shows that many people have embraced this aspect of American culture.

A1 (+ve): When everyone does the same thing, it is easier to communicate (language) or understand each other

A2 (-ve): Dominance of foreign culture leads to diminishing of the local culture. Governments may step in and create laws to counteract the loss of local culture, occasionally limiting citizens’ lives while controlling foreign influences.

Q

GDExA cultural hybridisation.

A

G: Globalisation allows for an easier transfer of ideas and cultures as easier transport has been enabled by the advancements in technology. Foreign and local cultures come into contact more easily, allowing for mixing.

D: Cultural hybridisation is the proces by which foreign and local cultures are blended, resulting in unique combinations containing elements from both cultures.

Ex: Salsa is a Latin American music genre that originates from New York, which is a mixture of foreign Afro Caribbean musical influences and North American jazz and rock.

A1 (+ve): More cultural diversity and exposure to foreign cultures, better understanding of other cultures.

A2 (-ve): If not incorporated properly, may lead to riots and unhappiness. May also lead to loss of cultures. Thus, citizens of a country may protest against the companies involved. Destruction of property and reduction of work efficiency may result, slowing down the country’s economy.
