1) Motivation
Needs and desires that drive or draw us to think/feel/act as we do. Communication motivated by social need for affiliation, achievement, anxiety, reduce uncertainty
2) Self-image/identity
Mental picture of who we see ourselves as; influenced by how others see us. Communication affects us and is as affected by our identity, which is shopped within context of culture
3) Credibility
The intelligence, character, and goodwill that an audience perceives in a message source. Verbal and nonverbal messages are validated or discounted by others ‘ perceptions of our character
4) Expectation
Our anticipation of how others will act or react towards us. What we expect to hear or see will affect our perceptions, interpretations, responses
5) Audience Adaptation
Strategic creation or adjustment of message in light of audience. Person centered message increase odds of achieving communication goals
6) Social COnstruction
Communal construction of social world - we make realities. People in conversation co-construct our realities and are shaped by worlds they create
7) Shared Meaning
People’s common interpretation or mutual understanding of what a message signifies (create common meaning of message). Communication is successful to the extent that we share a common interpretation of signs we use
8) Narrative
Story words and deeds that have sequence and meaning for those who live, create, or interpret them. We respond favorably to stories and dramatic imagery we can identify with
9) Conflict-Struggle
Between people who are in competition over control, resources, or differences in goals or values. Conflict is inevitable and will manifest himself in language. Healthy communication can make conflict productive.
10) Dialogue
Transparent conversation that other creates unanticipated relational outcomes. Isn’t just talk; it’s authentic, respectful, inclusive, and supportive form of communication.
