Genderlect
A term suggesting that masculine and feminine styles of discourse can be viewed as distinct cultural dialects; like a different language.
Rapport Talk (RAP)
The typical style of women, which seeks to establish connection with others
Report Talk (REP)
The typical monologic style of men, which seeks to command attention, convey information, and win arguments.
RAP/REP Talk Manifests Itself in 5 Contextx
1) Public v private conversation - women talk more in private conversations, men talk in mixed company. 2) Telling stories - men tell jokes or compelling stories to top one another. Women establish relation by showing vulnerability through self-deprecation. 3) Listening - women tend to be active and participating listeners while men often appear to be less involved. 4) Asking question - men don’t ask for fear of appearing ignorant or incompetent while women see asking as an opportunity to connect. 5) Conflict - men are more inclined to conflict men are also acutely aware when they are being told what to do, which is a source of conflict.

A supportive interruption showing agreement, encouragement, or solidarity, subtly different from disruption or domination

A short question at the end of a declarative statement, often used by women to soften the sting of potential disagreement or invite open, friendly dialogue
