- Protection from Weather: Clothes keep us warm in cold weather and protect us from sun in the heat.
- Identification: Uniforms are used to identify people in school, work and sports.
- Safety: Protective gear is worn by firefighters, chefs, soldiers and builders.

What are the guidelines for buying clothes?

- Functions: Consider the function,
- Care: Choose clothes that can be easily washed and cared for
- Fit: Consider the fit
- Cost: Decide whether the clothes are good value
- Style: Consider whether the garment is flattering to you

- Complete an outfit
- Create an interesting look

- Can be functional, for example bags and rucksacks.

- Children’s wear needs to be washable and durable
- Rainwear needs to be waterproof
- Sports clothes need to be comfortable and lightweight e.g. nylon

What are fashion trends?
A
Changes in fashion are called fashion trends. They can last a very long time or they can change quickly. A fashion fad is a very short-lived fashion, and is usually very cheap.

- Famous People: Film stars, pop stars and sports stars
- Historical Events: World wars - made new fabrics e.g. Nylon
- The Media: Magazines and TV
- The Fashion Industry: New colours and styles every season
- Street Fashion: Everyday clothes become fashionable

Describe the fashion industry.
A
- Couturier: Fashion designer. Twice a year, fashion designers show their collections in London , Milan, New York and Paris.
- Haute Couture: Original and very expensive clothes made by fashion designers for individual people.
- Prêt-à-porter: A designers ‘ready-to-wear’ collection. They are good quality, well-made clothes and are cheaper then Haute Couture
- Off-the-peg Clothing: The clothes you see in most shops. Affordable fashion for the general population.

What are the lines on clothes?
A
- Vertical Lines: Make us look skinnier and taller
- Horizontal Lines: Make us look broader
- Curved Lines: Give outfits a softer look (Uneven Hems)
- Diagonal Lines: Dramatic and striking
